BlackRock’s Crypto ETFs Show Disproportionate Fee Generation Despite Small Asset Footprint
BlackRock's digital asset products, including its record-breaking $60.7 billion crypto ETFs, generated $42 million in fees during Q1—a modest sum compared to the firm's overall ETF revenue of $2.4 billion. Yet crypto's fee share (1.75%) slightly outperforms its 1.11% share of assets under management, highlighting its premium pricing within BlackRock's low-fee ETF complex.
The disparity underscores crypto's niche profitability: annualized fees for digital assets ran at 24.8 basis points versus 17.2 basis points for the broader ETF portfolio. This revenue resilience comes as iShares posted $132 billion in record net inflows, making crypto's contribution a rounding error but proving its viability as a fee-generating product line.
